Now MTU students have every information on its webpage

The Noida-based Mahamaya Technical University (MTU) has decided to give a separate webpage to every student in the new academic session beginning July. The webpage will be a complete databank of the student's academic record, like class attendance, marks in different semesters, annual marksheets, particulars of assignments and the marks scored.

Sources said the webpage will available on the university's website - www.mtu.ac.in, adding that the university may hire Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) to execute the project.

The students will be provided with an user ID and password to update static information like address and contact details on the webpage, a source added.

An official said students can download their score-sheets and scanned certificates from the webpage for presentation during job interviews when the university has not yet issued the final marksheet. As the university will itself update the webpages, these records will be considered authentic, the source added.

Tech student hangs himself in Uttar Pradesh

Greater Noida (Uttar Pradesh): A first-year B.Tech student of a private engineering college, upset over a family dispute, hanged himself from the ceiling fan of his room in the Kasna area here, police said.

Vivek Patel, a student of IILM college in Knowledge Park area, committed suicide in his house on Tuesday afternoon, said Rahul Kumar, Circle Officer-I of Greater Noida.

Vivek was from Jalaun district in Uttar Pradesh and was staying with his relatives in the NTPC Colony.

His uncle Avinash Patel is a faculty member in his college and he was in the institute when the incident came to light. His aunt was, however, at home.

Around 12 noon, Vivek’s aunt called him several times but got no response. He was in his room. When she opened his room’s door to find out why he was not responding to the calls, she found him hanging from the ceiling fan.She called her neighbours and informed Avinash about the incident.

‘Vivek was said to be under depression for the last few days over some family property dispute. We have seized his body and sent it for post-mortem examination. Investigations are on,’ the circle officer said.

Pvt colleges move Delhi HC against AICTE’s approval norms

PUNE: Private unaided professional institutions have moved the Delhi high court against the All India Council for Technical Education’s (AICTE) latest norms for approval of new institutions or renewal of the existing ones for academic year (AY) 2011-12. The institutions have dubbed the norms as arbitrary, illegal, illogical and in contravention of various Supreme Court judgements.
Some of the key norms that are under fire from the institutions relate to a “drastic” increase in the deposit money to be kept with the AICTE with a 10-year lock-in period for starting an engineering college, hike in processing fee under various heads, reduction in NRI admission quota from 15% to 5%, stringent punitive measures against non-compliance of refund in case of cancellation of admission, maintenance of faculty-student ratio, provision of 10 laboratories per course and constitution of board of governors by the institutions and providing for representation of two AICTE nominees.
The AICTE had issued the new approval norms on December 10, 2010, for establishment of new technical institutions, extension of new courses, change in student intake capacity, creation of supernumerary quota i.e. number of seats over and above the sanctioned student intake for a given course at an institution and renewal of approval, etc. The new norms in the form of an ‘Approval Process Handbook 2011-12′ were in supersession of the approval norms issued on January 15, 2010.
The Federation of Associations of Managements of Unaided Professional Educational Institutions, which is the apex body of private unaided professional colleges in the country, has said that several of the new approval norms are contradictory to the apex court rulings in landmark cases such as the TMA Pai Foundation as well as the Islamic Academy of Education vs State of Karnataka; and the P A Inamdar vs State of Maharashtra, which are quite clear about the private institution’s rights to fees and admissions. “The norms are an encroachment upon these rights,” the federation has said.
“The federation filed a writ petition (No. 690 of 2011) last week in the Delhi high court after representatives of its member-associations unanimously resolved for legally contesting the AICTE norms at a meeting held in Delhi on February 14,” R P Joshi, vice-president, Association of the Managements of Unaided Engineering Colleges (AMUEC) in Maharashtra, told TOI on Wednesday. The AMUEC controls 177 private unaided engineering colleges in the state while the federation involves similar associations from key states such as Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, West Bengal, Orissa and Gujarat, among others.
Joshi said, “The federation had asked all its member associations to submit their views on the new approval norms. We (AMUEC) did so by expressing our concern over provisions like the hike in fixed deposit to be kept with the AICTE from the existing Rs 35 lakh to Rs 90 lakh for a 10-year period.” He said, “The norms provide that the deposit money will be refunded at the end of 10 years, but the AICTE will retain the interest earned on the same.”
“Similarly, the norms relating to maintenance of 100% faculty is impractical, considering the acute shortage of faculty faced by engineering colleges across the country,” said Joshi. “The Rama Rao committee, which was appointed by AICTE itself in the past, has recognised the faculty problem in its report,” he added.
The litigation is likely to have a bearing on the AICTE’s schedule for approval of new professional institutions, including engineering colleges. The last date for filing of pleas with the AICTE is February 28. The federation moved the petition on February 15 seeking the court’s intervention on the grounds that the AICTE may not accept their applications for not having fulfilled the new norms.
On February 18, the Delhi high court’s single-judge bench of justice Rajiv Sahai Endlaw, which heard the petition, ruled that the institutions can file their applications by the stipulated date subject to further orders in the writ petition. The bench also allowed the petitioner’s plea to file a rejoinder to the counter-affidavit filed by the AICTE in relation to the petition. The case has since been posted for the next hearing on March 4.DONE, ms
